Woman sentenced to community order for pouring beer on stranger
A 43-year-old woman was sentenced to nine months community service after pouring beer on a stranger.
Jackie-Lee Hawes poured beer over a stranger at North Wollongong train station on May 17. She said the stranger provoked her by "trampling on a box" in a rubbish bin.
She threw more beer when the person reacted. Hawes pleaded guilty to affray and appeared before court on Tuesday, October 27.
Judge David Williams said the incident was concerning and alarming to bystanders. At the time, Hawes was having mental health issues.
She was later diagnosed with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. Despite her troubled history, she had made real progress during recent supervision.
She also completed drug and alcohol treatment. She received a nine-month community-based sentence with ongoing supervision.
