David Pocock pitches independent-led minority government for 2028

Senator David Pocock wants community independents to form a minority government after 2028.

David Pocock was a former Wallaby. Pocock is now an Independent senator.

Pocock shared his political vision at his first National Press Club address on Wednesday. Pocock wants community independents to hold balance of power.

They would form a minority government after the 2028 federal election. The senator said the current two-party system is failing Australians.

Pocock said the attack on fellow independent Helen Haines strengthened his resolve to push for this change. Australia's last minority government was Julia Gillard's Labor in 2010.

It governed with support from the Greens and independents. Pocock said voters could choose something better than the two-party system by 2028.

Why it mattersA shift to independents-led government would greatly change how laws are passed. It would also need major political shifts in federal parliament.

AustraliaIf realized, Pocock's proposal would reshape Australia's federal governance, moving away from the traditional two-party system and handing power to independent MPs.
