GWM targets 1500 ute sales a month to crack Australia's top five
GWM Australia must sell 1500 utes monthly by mid-to-late 2027 to crack the top five.
Chinese automaker GWM has set a tight deadline to prove it belongs in Australia's car market elite. The company needs to hit 1500 ute sales each month to crack the top five by mid-to-late next year, up from current rates.
GWM ranks seventh overall with 4870 monthly sales as of August 2026, ahead of Ford but trailing Hyundai and Mazda. The company just launched an updated Cannon Alpha ute and Tank 500 SUV with a new 3.0-litre turbo-diesel engine designed to compete head-to-head with the Isuzu D-Max, Toyota HiLux, and Ford Ranger.
GWM says it has covered all fuel types and customer needs, offering 2.0 and 2.4-litre diesels plus plug-in hybrid options. If it misses the target, the company signalled it will reflect on what needs to improve.
Why it mattersGWM's push signals serious competition in Australia's ute market, which could push rivals to innovate or cut prices to hold share.
AustraliaMore competition from a new player in Australia's prized ute segment may give buyers more options and put pressure on Ford, Toyota, and Isuzu pricing.
