Melbourne's first 30C day forecast within days

Melbourne is forecast to reach 30C or higher within days after a brief cold snap delivered snow to Tasmania.

A dramatic weather shift is hitting Melbourne after snow fell in the Tasmanian ranges this week. From Thursday, temperatures will climb through the low 20s, potentially reaching 30C by mid-week.

That's significantly warmer than the October average of 20C. The cold came from the Southern Ocean, but warm conditions move in as the pattern changes.

The Tasman Sea is much warmer than average, holding moisture that feeds into Victoria's weather. A lengthy dry spell following this warmth could raise bushfire risk, particularly if strong winds return.
