Tasmania's premier posted about Christmas being cut before reading dept letter
Jeremy Rockliff posted that Christmas was being cut. The Education Department told him that same day that Christmas was staying.
Trevallyn Primary School is in northern Tasmania. The school was planning to change its end-of-year event name from "Christmas on the Hill" to "End of Year Extravaganza".
A businessman complained to the school and the Education Minister about Christmas being minimised. Two-and-a-half weeks later, Premier Jeremy Rockliff posted on social media.
He said the school had tried to remove all references to Christmas. The Education Department wrote to the premier's office that same day.
They said Christmas was still an important part of the event. Carols and Santa were still planned.
Rockliff said he was travelling when the letter arrived. He read it the next day.
The premier has refused to say sorry for his post. He won't apologize for the upset caused to the school.
School staff and the education union say they suffered harm. The social media pile-on that followed caused them real pain.

Why it mattersThe timing raises questions about how public figures respond to complaints. They don't always check facts first. Schools caught in the middle face real impact from this.
AustraliaThe controversy plays out in Tasmania but reflects broader debates about inclusion and tradition in Australian schools.
