Australia Post faces government review after $107m annual loss

The federal government has ordered a parliamentary committee to investigate Australia Post. It lost $107 million last year.

Communications Minister Anika Wells asked MPs to look at how Australia Post can survive. Mail volumes are falling.

Delivery costs are rising. Online shopping keeps growing.

The postal service lost $107 million last year. Australians and businesses will be invited to share feedback on what they need from a national postal network.

Australia Post has tried to balance shrinking letter deliveries with booming parcel numbers. In 2025, it hit record highs with about 111 million parcels delivered in November and December alone.

Letter deliveries have been cut to every second day to save money. Wells said changing consumer behavior and competition are challenging what she called a beloved institution.
