Oceania server turned Final Fantasy XIV from lonely to thriving for Australians

Final Fantasy XIV's 2022 Oceania server revealed a thriving Australian player base scattered across other regions.

Before the Oceania data centre arrived in 2022, Australian players of Final Fantasy XIV had three bad choices. Australian players could struggle to find English speakers on the Asia server.

Australian players could cope with few players on American servers during their sleep hours. Australian players could endure crippling input lag on the European server.

When Square Enix finally released the Oceania servers after 12 years, the response was overwhelming. A Melbourne community organiser described the shock: thousands of Australian players emerged, with 30-minute queues just to log in.

The game turned from a lonely multiplayer experience into a real community. An annual meetup at PAX Australia now draws players from across Oceania, many wearing game character costumes.
