Driver caught at 162kmh on Hume with family told court they'd likely die

A 36-year-old truck driver was banned from driving for one year after being caught at 162kmh with his family in the car.

Gorge Youssef from Sydney was driving toward Melbourne on the Hume Freeway on September 19 when he sped past an unmarked police car in Wodonga. The Wodonga Magistrates Court heard the speed was "manifestly dangerous and excessive".

Police told the court that if he crashed at that speed, he would likely die and any other vehicles nearby would be at severe risk. Youssef was travelling 45 metres per second.

A woman and two teenage girls were passengers in the car, which was impounded. Magistrate Megan Casey told him: "When you're travelling at that speed, your ability to react to anything out of the ordinary is non-existent."

She said he and his family were incredibly fortunate to be alive. Youssef was banned from driving for a year and ordered to donate $500 to the court fund.
