Pope and Pentagon clash over death penalty broadcast
Pope Leo XIV declared capital punishment inadmissible. The US plans to livestream an execution.
The American pope marked World Day Against the Death Penalty on Saturday, saying the death penalty goes against human dignity. Hours later, the Vatican secretary of state said the planned US execution was unacceptable.
Nidal Malik Hasan was convicted of a 2009 shooting at Fort Hood. That shooting killed 13 people and wounded 32 others.
He is scheduled to be executed by firing squad on December 3. The Vatican called livestreaming the execution barbaric.
It said making death a public event is unacceptable. In 2018, Pope Francis amended Catholic teaching.
He declared capital punishment inadmissible in all circumstances. The US bishops conference expressed shock at the Pentagon's decision.
