Teachers stage rolling one-hour strikes across ACT schools starting Monday
One-hour work stoppages at different schools run from 19 to 23 October as teachers demand the government guarantee adequate staffing levels.
The Australian Education Union is escalating its campaign with one-hour work stoppages planned across ACT schools from Monday 19 October through Friday 23 October. Each day a different set of schools will be affected.
Stoppages will run between 8:30 am and 9:30 am. The fourth round of industrial action this year follows complaints about severe staffing pressures.
Teachers have reported being asked to supervise classes of up to 90 students. Schools lack a centralised system to find replacement staff when teachers are absent.
Parents are encouraged to keep children at home until 9:30 am on the day their school is affected. Preschools will be closed during stoppages because of supervision ratios.
Before-school care will continue. The union is demanding the government guarantee adequate staffing levels based on what individual schools need.
