Stephen Curry's Spamalot musical can't overcome dated gags in Sydney
Stephen Curry stars, but the show's dated jokes and derivative music leave no bite for anyone beyond devoted fans.
Spamalot brings the Monty Python classic to the stage, with The Castle's Stephen Curry as King Arthur. Curry performs well as the vain king, and the supporting cast brings genuine enthusiasm.
The real problem: the gags are dated, the music derivative, and without fresh satire or improvisation, the show lacks teeth. The production pairs low-fi costumes and hand-made props with high-tech backdrops and a digital Black Knight.
But clever design can't lift material relying on in-jokes for a nostalgic audience. The show runs through 18 October at Sydney Event Centre, then 22-25 October at Rooty Hill.
