South Canberra man charged over assault on partner

A 47-year-old man was arrested and charged with choking and assaulting his partner at their south Canberra home on September 24.

ACT Policing charged a 47-year-old man after an incident at a south Canberra home on September 24. Police allege he strangled the woman, struck her in the head several times, attempted to suffocate her, and assaulted her with a belt.

The man was arrested in Canberra city on Tuesday night. The 47-year-old has been charged with two counts of choking another person, two counts of aggravated assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and one count of common assault.

He will appear in the ACT Magistrates Court on Wednesday. ACT Policing said the force stands ready to assist victims experiencing family violence.
