Historic Coniston Station to get lifts replacing dangerous ramps
Transport for NSW will install two lifts at Coniston Station south of Wollongong. The station is more than a century old. Construction is targeted for 2028.
Coniston Station has served Wollongong for more than a century. It will finally get lifts to replace the steep, unsafe ramps.
The upgrades will include four new accessible parking spaces, better bathrooms, and moved bus stops. Current ramps are too steep for wheelchairs.
They even end with stairs on one side. This creates a risk for people with mobility devices.
The station has grown increasingly busy, with 125,368 entries and exits in the year to May 2026. Planning and design work will happen next year.
Construction is expected to start in 2028. It will take about 18 months.
The upgrade also includes better lighting and CCTV cameras.
