Widow cycles to raise dementia research funds after Bernie's death
After her husband Bernie was diagnosed with dementia, Janice is cycling to raise funds for dementia research in Australia.
Janice and Bernie Fitzpatrick were together for almost 60 years, married since 1967. Janice and Bernie shared countless hours cycling together.
When Bernie was diagnosed with dementia in May 2018, biking remained one of the few things that still brought him joy. Even as the disease took his memory and his abilities as an English teacher, he could still pedal.
In Australia in 2024, dementia was the second leading cause of death, affecting 424,511 people. Janice joined a dementia carers group and realised how many others faced the same struggles.
