Simon Lucey steps down as AIML director to launch new venture
The director of Australia's largest university-based machine learning institute is leaving to start an undisclosed AI venture.
Professor Simon Lucey left his role as director of the Australian Institute for Machine Learning. He led the 200-member research body for six years.
He built it into Australia's largest university machine learning lab. He became an early champion for local AI abilities.
Lucey will stay at the University of Adelaide in a part-time role. He will teach and oversee existing grants.
A new venture called Metacognition is another AIML spinoff. It has $10 million in backing and is led by Dr Paul Dalby from the Rozetta Institute.
The Australian Institute for Machine Learning was launched in 2018. It was a joint venture between the University of Adelaide and the South Australian government.
