Canberra Woolworths trials scan-as-you-shop trolleys with tablets
Woolworths Canberra Airport introduced Scan&Go trolleys that let customers scan groceries on a tablet as they move through the store.
Shoppers at Woolworths Canberra Airport can now unlock a tablet by scanning their Rewards Card, then scan items directly into their trolley as they browse. Items without barcodes like fruit and vegetables are weighed on in-store scales, which generate a barcode for the tablet to scan.
At checkout, customers scan the tablet barcode and pay without removing items from the trolley. Woolworths says the system saves time and lets shoppers track spending as they shop.
Shopper Carol Cooke disagreed, saying customers now do work once done by staff. Fellow shopper Jack Nolan backed the system, calling it faster than cramped self-checkouts.
Woolworths director Matthew Baveas said the trolleys will be rolled out to more stores.
