New Jersey man wins $847 million Powerball jackpot
An anonymous New Jersey resident won $US847 million in the Powerball lottery after two months without a jackpot winner.
A ticket-holder in New Jersey has won the $US847 million Powerball jackpot, the ninth-largest ever. The draw on Wednesday night produced winning numbers 15, 34, 41, 53, 56 and Powerball 21.
The winner can take the full amount in yearly payments or accept a one-time cash prize of $US363.1 million. After federal tax of 24 per cent and state tax of 8 per cent, the net payout will be lower.
New Jersey law allows lottery winners to remain anonymous indefinitely. This was the first Powerball jackpot win since August, when another ticket-holder claimed a $US1.04 billion prize.
Why it mattersA jackpot this large represents life-changing wealth, and the long drought between winners drives public interest in the lottery.
AustraliaNo direct Australian effect, though Australians follow major US lottery wins for interest and comparison to Australian lotteries.
