Man sentenced after threatening to kill police nine times in 10 minutes
Wayne Grant made nine death threats to police during a 10-minute welfare check at his West Wollongong home.
Police responded to a welfare check at West Wollongong around 2am on August 15 after concerns for a man's mental health. Wayne Grant, 53, held a glass bottle and refused to let officers inside.
Grant threatened to kill himself and strike officers with the bottle. An officer drew his Taser as a warning, and Grant threw the bottle down.
But Grant continued threatening to kill police as officers handcuffed him and placed him in the vehicle. He made at least nine threats during the less than 10-minute interaction.
Grant pleaded guilty to two counts of assaulting police without bodily harm and one count of harassing officers on September 29. Defence lawyer Mehmet Yilmaz told the court Grant had struggled with alcohol, drinking half a case of beer daily.
Grant was sentenced to a nine-month supervised community corrections order with required alcohol treatment and counselling. He was also fined $600.
