Brisbane trials AI traffic lights that adjust in real time on 37 intersections
Brisbane Council will deploy AI on 37 intersections to adjust traffic lights in real time.
The $15 million trial will run for around six months across the two major inner-suburban corridors. The AI system reacts to weather, historical data, and events like Suncorp Stadium or Gabba matches.
The system adjusts light sequences automatically. Council staff at the traffic management centre will monitor and oversee the system.
The system installs on top of existing signal boxes. Similar trials elsewhere showed a 15 percent improvement in traffic flow and a 22 percent reduction in queueing.
Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner called it the biggest traffic management step in decades. Infrastructure chair Ryan Murphy said the system will give staff the ability to manage the network rather than just watch it.
Data is kept on council-owned Brisbane servers, and faces and number plates are blurred in any footage.
