Plant fungus that destroys whole crops detected in Australia for first time
A deadly root fungus found in two NT properties destroys entire mature crops and cannot be eliminated.
A soil-borne fungus that kills crop roots has been found in Australia for the first time. It was found in cucumber, honeydew and rock melon crops in the NT's Darwin and Katherine regions in August.
The fungus is called Monosporascus cannonballus. It causes root rot and can destroy whole mature crops if left unmanaged.
Once present, it cannot be eliminated. The fungus is already spreading in the US, India, Taiwan, Japan, Europe and the Middle East.
Farmers must use management practices instead of trying to eliminate it. Industry experts say the discovery is worrying and will raise production costs.
Growers already face other pressures. NT authorities are not imposing biosecurity restrictions but are working with industry groups to help farmers manage the disease.
