NSW backs QLD's protest slogan ban in High Court fight
NSW will defend laws outlawing two protest slogans that Queensland banned in March as activists say the move helps their case.
Queensland made "globalise the intifada" and "from the river to the sea" illegal when used to menace or offend. The ban took effect in March.
NSW has now told the High Court it will defend Queensland's decision. More than 30 people have been charged since the laws began, including four High Court plaintiffs.
Lead plaintiff Remah Naji said NSW's entry was welcome: activists will use it to expand the fight from a state case into a national one. Queensland says the court should send the charges to the Magistrates Court and dismiss the rest of the case.
