Venue closes days before Halloween event, leaving DJs scrambling
Gallipoli House closed with three days' notice, forcing Powder Your Nose to cancel their fifth annual Halloween event.
Organisers of a major Halloween event in Newcastle had to scramble for a new venue after being told their booked location was closing. Powder Your Nose is an all-female DJ collective planning HallowQueen for Saturday night.
It was their biggest event of the year at Gallipoli House. Co-founder Ella Griffiths said the CEO sent one message with "sympathies" and a promise of an announcement, then went silent.
By Wednesday the venue had closed. The timing was brutal: the group had already booked 12 DJs and paid for flights for one from Queensland.
They spent about three grand on production. Ticket sales were their fastest ever.
Griffiths said she felt she'd let many people down. She received offers of alternative venues within hours of posting about the cancellation on social media.
