Newcastle Knights teen set for 90-year NRL Grand Final debut record
Diesel Hagan may debut in an NRL Grand Final on Sunday, 90 years after the last rookie did.
The teenager will slot onto the Knights' bench after a suspension to teammate Phoenix Crossland opened the door. Knights coach Justin Holbrook confirmed Hagan's selection on Saturday morning.
The last player to debut in a grand final was Eddie Lockhart in 1936. Hagan's rise has been rapid: just 18 months ago he was fighting to hold his place in the Under-19s squad.
This year he played for New South Wales Under-19s, won Player of the Match, captained the side, and performed well in NSW Cup. Before committing to Newcastle, the Roosters also showed interest and he visited their headquarters, but he chose to stay close to home.
