Bowling club staff disarm shotgun robber in two minutes
Staff and patrons disarmed an armed robber at a Newcastle bowling club in two minutes.
Blair Watson rode a bike to Edgeworth Sport and Recreational Club armed with a loaded double-barrel shotgun on a Friday evening in January, having scoped the venue hours earlier. Watson hid in bushes, then walked inside and pointed the gun at a male staff member, demanding money.
As Watson dropped a bag of coins and bent to pick it up while clutching the shotgun, the worker grabbed the firearm near the trigger and wrestled him to the ground, ripping off his balaclava. Patrons streamed behind the counter and pinned Watson down for five minutes while he violently resisted.
One patron threw the gun over the bar. When police arrived, Watson was being held by multiple people.
He pleaded guilty to armed robbery in Newcastle Local Court last week.
