ASIO disrupted 16 terror threats in 9 months after Bondi shootings
ASIO revealed it disrupted 16 terror cases since the December Bondi shooting, while warning al-Qaida and ISIS are growing their capabilities.
Australia's domestic intelligence agency disrupted 16 terrorism cases in nine months following the Bondi shootings, ASIO Director General Mike Burgess revealed as the nation marked 25 years since 9/11.
The cases included a planned anti-Semitic attack, threats against Muslims and an alleged racist extremist found with weapons and ammunition. Burgess warned that transnational terrorism has re-emerged as a "significant, malignant security concern".
Al-Qaida, ISIS and their affiliates are expanding their reach online and in the real world. Burgess noted ASIO has helped foil 33 major terrorism plots since 2014 where attacks were imminent or planning advanced.
Burgess also said radicalised people are increasingly adopting mixed ideologies, being radicalised online by strangers rather than in person, and are often minors rather than adults.
