Murray to Moyne charity ride likely to end after 40 years
Murray to Moyne cycling relay will probably end next year as volunteers burn out; it raised over $30 million.
The Murray to Moyne has been a south-west Victoria institution since 1987. Riders cycle roughly 520 kilometres in relay teams from Mildura or Echuca to Port Fairy, stopping in Hamilton to rest.
The event has raised more than $30 million for local causes, including $250,000 at last year's ride alone. Participation has dropped sharply: before COVID-19, about 800 riders a year took part; now it averages 400.
Committee president Peter Bollard said volunteer organisers are burning out with no one stepping up to replace them. "It's probably a generational thing," he said.
"People get tired and they're not going to do it forever." Committee administrator Jenny McLean, 76, said the event takes most of her year to organise.
