Bendigo's Golden Dragon Museum gets $41m revamp
Museum gains $41 million for new two-storey space; name changes to Chinese Museum of Australia.
The Golden Dragon Museum in Bendigo is planning a major rebuild. A bamboo garden at the eastern end of the site will be demolished to make way for a new two-storey exhibition space.
The museum will also get revamped storage for its precious collection of cultural objects. The circular exhibition area will be renovated.
Sun Loong and Loong will get new exhibition spaces, while Dai Gum Loong will remain curled around the ramp. Project backers hint at hidden details in the building's facade, possibly including a future digital dragon display.
Staff will gain proper museum workspaces for curation and preservation. The museum is changing its name to the Chinese Museum of Australia.
The organisation is still fundraising from governments and some philanthropic partners. Construction could start on Easter Monday 2029, marking 150 years since Chinese involvement in Bendigo's Easter festival.
