Melbourne Museum's Rome: Empire, Power, People exhibition gives a fresh look at ancient Rome. It shows how we have viewed it across history.
Most artefacts were borrowed from museums in Rome and Florence. They have not been seen in Australia before.
The exhibition moves through different eras and visual styles, room by room. Each one shows how societies at different times understood the ancient city.
You see Romans' own view of their mythological past. Then you see the republic's fall through paintings from the 16th and 18th centuries.
Then comes imperial Rome in an almost art deco style. Later sections include digital recreations of the Colosseum and Nero's Golden House.
The final rooms immerse you in daily Roman life. You see recreations of bathhouses and dining rooms.
The exhibition runs until October 25.
