Magistrate delays sentencing for repeat assault offender

Theo Walsh-Pillar, 37, pleaded guilty on Monday in Warrnambool Magistrates Court to assault. Police said only jail was appropriate.
They pointed to his criminal history and a previous jail term for similar assault. Magistrate Simon Guthrie wanted to think about the sentence overnight.
He did not want to rush. The assault involved a broken motel window during an intimate moment.
This led to an argument between Walsh-Pillar and a woman. Court heard Walsh-Pillar then damaged the motel room.
He grabbed the woman around her neck and chest, and punched and kicked her in the face. Walsh-Pillar's lawyer said he has been methamphetamine-free for 18 months.
But he still struggles with alcohol and cannabis use.
