Mount Helen man sentenced for arson after attacking uncle
Matthew Lynch, 42, was sentenced to 369 days prison for arson after attacking his uncle.
Matthew Lynch has been sentenced to 369 days in prison plus two years of community corrections for setting fire to a rental unit in Mount Helen on September 18, 2025. The fire caused $237,000 damage to the home on Shakespeare Avenue.
Lynch attacked his uncle with repeated punches after an argument. Lynch then set the property alight and tried to ignite the front door before emergency services arrived.
Lynch's uncle was dragged from the property and later found himself homeless, stressed and lonely because of the fire. Judge Peter Matthews noted Lynch had schizophrenia and was experiencing hallucinations at the time of the arson.
His illness meant the crime was serious but not as serious as it would have been if he had been well. Lynch was discharged from medical care just two days before the attack.
