A 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck Panama's southern coast with tsunami warnings sent across Central America.
A strong earthquake near Panama's southern tip shook the capital and surrounding areas. The quake hit 10 kilometres deep.
The epicentre was close to the rural community of La Pitaloza in Herrera province. Television footage showed people leaving buildings as tremors rippled through Panama City and into neighbouring Costa Rica.
The US Tsunami Warning System sent alerts for the Pacific coasts of Colombia and Ecuador. There were no early reports of damage.
