Mystery Pacific object visible since 1938 could solve Earhart disappearance
An underwater object found in 1938 photos may be Amelia Earhart's lost plane.
Researchers found a mysterious object in a shallow coral lagoon in the Phoenix Islands. The object appeared in satellite images in 2020.
The same shape was visible in photos from 1938. US experts from Purdue University and the Archaeological Legacy Institute gathered in Kiribati to study it.
They want to know if it is Amelia Earhart's Lockheed Electra. Earhart and navigator Fred Noonan vanished in the plane on July 2, 1937.
This happened during her attempt to fly around the world. Four days before that flight, she landed in Darwin.
The team will use magnetometers and sonar to inspect the object. Then a hydraulic dredge will expose it for identification.
