Greensteel plans 600,000-tonne mill in historic Newcastle building
More than 200 workers will be employed. They will produce steel to supply housing, transport and energy sectors locally.
Greensteel Australia will open an electric arc steel mill at Newcastle in early 2028. The mill will produce up to 600,000 tonnes of finished steel yearly and directly employ more than 200 workers, including fitters, electricians, crane drivers, metallurgists and engineers.
The company will restore the historic 1933 Tubemakers building on the 70,000-square-metre site. Electric arc production makes no carbon dioxide emissions.
This cuts Australia's building industry's carbon impact. Local supply will reduce reliance on imports.
It helps keep steel prices steady for builders. The mill will support state and federal housing targets.
