A freight train issue delayed two trains, leaving about 100 fans stranded for about 40 minutes at a lakeside pub.
Newcastle Knights fans heading to Accor Stadium on Sunday morning got stuck at Morisset and Dora Creek stations after a freight train issue blocked the line. Calum Drysdale, who drove from Moree to catch the 8.57am train, waited about 40 minutes before giving up.
Calum Drysdale and his friend headed to the Lake Macquarie Hotel, where he reckoned about 100 other stranded fans had gathered. The pub staff, expecting a quiet Sunday, handled the crowd well.
Transport for NSW said repair crews worked on mechanical issues and replacement buses would start arriving from noon. The delay came as more than 50,000 fans headed to Sydney for the match, most of them Knights supporters.
