Saudi-led coalition strikes Yemen oil sites as Houthis vow retaliation

The Saudi-led coalition carried out overnight air strikes on Yemeni oil facilities as the Houthis promised a painful response.

The Saudi-led coalition carried out new air strikes on oil facilities west of Sana'a, Yemen's capital. The strikes marked a fresh escalation of Middle East violence.

The coalition warned civilians to leave the Yemeni Oil Company site and nearby storage areas. Witnesses reported hearing explosions, though it was unclear which facilities were hit.

Houthi military spokesman Brigadier General Yahya Saree said any Saudi attack on Sana'a would face a firm and painful response in Riyadh. The strikes follow a Houthi missile and drone attack on Riyadh's international airport on Saturday.

That attack killed at least 13 people and wounded more than 300. Several airlines have suspended service to Saudi Arabia because of the attacks.

Why it mattersThe back-and-forth attacks could pull the US deeper into the conflict and threaten shipping lanes in the Red Sea that carry oil worldwide.

AustraliaAustralian airlines may face disruptions or increased costs if Middle East routes remain volatile. Oil prices could be affected if shipping through the Red Sea is restricted.
