Retiring Tasmanian Senator Jonno Duniam played a key role in ousting Liberal leader Sussan Ley in January. Liberal figures met in secret on January 29.
The meeting was at a private home in Melbourne. The meeting occurred just hours before a memorial service for former MP Katie Allen.
Prime Minister Albanese said the timing was astonishing. Duniam told a podcast the timing was a source of regret.
He says the leadership change was needed. He backs Angus Taylor to win the next election.
He would privately back Andrew Hastie for the top job after that. Duniam is retiring from federal politics after this sitting week to spend more time with his family.
