Zac Lomax impresses for Australia A and pushes Wallabies selection case

Zac Lomax won several balls in the air and set up a try in his Australia A debut, pushing for Wallabies selection.

Lomax earned his first run for Australia A in a 52-0 rout of the USA Eagles in New Jersey on Saturday, playing 60 minutes at inside centre. The 27-year-old dominated the skies, winning several balls in the air and setting up a try in his spell.

Lomax also saved one under the high ball. The Wallabies have struggled with aerial contests, the recent Bledisloe Cup series showed their back three being outfought by New Zealand.

Wallabies coach Les Kiss is weighing whether to rush Lomax into the squad for the November Nations Championship. Lomax brings rare aerial ability to the back line, where wingers like Max Jorgensen lack his high-ball prowess.

Kiss is preparing to fly the squad to England for next weekend's Test against the English at Twickenham.

Why it mattersThe Wallabies' weakness under the high ball has cost them matches; a player who can dominate that area could be crucial just 11 months before the World Cup.

AustraliaIf Lomax gets a Wallabies call-up, it gives Australian rugby a new option in one of the sport's toughest positions and could help the team compete against top nations.
