Newcastle theatre company faces $490k loss unless Frozen musical sells 10,000
Theatre company needs about 10,000 extra ticket sales to avoid a $490,000 loss and possible closure.
The Very Popular Theatre Company is facing a loss. Artistic director Daniel Stoddart says Frozen The Broadway Musical opens October 10.
Stoddart says it is on track to lose about $490,000 unless ticket sales surge. The company hired over 100 artists, musicians, technicians and creatives for the Disney production at the Civic Theatre.
Without about 10,000 more sales, the company could close. Stoddart may have to sell his family home.
Stoddart says the production used the same financial model as comparable shows. But it is selling less than half the tickets of those earlier productions.
Until Friday night, all seats are discounted to $69 across all performances.

Why it mattersA major cultural institution hangs in the balance. A producer's personal finances do too. Both depend on ticket sales in the next three weeks. This tests whether regional theatre can survive in the current economy.
AustraliaIf The Very Popular Theatre Company closes, Newcastle loses two decades of local theatre-making and faces reduced cultural programming and creative employment in the Hunter region.
