Dapto's old dog racing betting room to become a country western line dancing

Dapto's old dog racing betting room will become the Illawarra Country Bootscooters' home for line dancing. The building stays the same.

The TAB betting room at Dapto Showground sat empty for 13 months. Greyhound racing shut down.

The track had run for 89 years. On October 9, the Dapto Agricultural and Horticultural Society applied for a new use.

The Illawarra Country Bootscooters run line dancing classes. They teach Monday through Friday at other venues.

They want to make this room their main home. The venue can hold about 250 people.

The bootscooters bring in about 30 people per class. That means far less noise, traffic, and parking than racing brought.

The building will stay the same. Only the use will change, from betting to dance classes.

Reusing the space cuts harm to the environment. It also serves the growing Dapto population.

Why it mattersEmpty community venues can either fall apart or get new life. This shows how unused buildings can meet new local needs without expensive rebuilding.

AustraliaRegional NSW gets a community facility restored and available, and line dancing enthusiasts around Illawarra get a dedicated, accessible venue if approval comes through.
