Construction has begun on Bundaberg's first hotel development in 20 years, a move to tackle a severe shortage in the tourism hub. The region is short about 800 beds every night, according to a hotel demand study.

The new hotel will create about 50 ongoing jobs and is expected to attract more travellers to the southern Great Barrier Reef region.
