Israeli election Tuesday as Netanyahu fights to form government
Benjamin Netanyahu seeks another term Tuesday despite polls suggesting his party will lack enough seats to govern.
Israel votes Tuesday in an election many see as historically significant for the country's direction. Most polls suggest Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud Party will not win enough seats to govern alone, forcing coalition negotiations.
His far-right coalition partners include National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, who has proposed removing nearly 90 per cent of Gaza's Palestinian population over seven years. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich is calling for Israel to annex most of Gaza and parts of Lebanon currently occupied.
These proposals risk destabilizing neighbouring countries like Egypt, Jordan and Syria. Israel is also facing escalating military tensions with Iran as the election approaches.
