Victoria's fast-tracked mega-batteries trigger local council safety push
Corangamite Shire demands safety measures for two rushed battery storage projects at Cobden and Camperdown.
Two massive battery storage facilities are being built in south-west Victoria. The local council has raised serious concerns the state is moving too fast.
The Cobden project will store 75MW of energy using up to 66 battery containers. Camperdown's facility will store 60MW across 54 containers.
The council worries about 160-tonne transformers rumbling through local roads. It also worries the local fire service can handle a major battery blaze.
It also worries about who pays to clean up when the projects shut down. The state planning minister makes the final call on energy projects above 1MW.
But the minister must listen to councils first.
