Canberra's struggling bars win a government champion to save nightlife

An ACT inquiry recommends creating a Night-Time Economy Commissioner and aid for venues harmed by light rail work.

A report released this morning says the ACT government should appoint a Night-Time Economy Commissioner with strong industry experience. The Commissioner would advocate for bars, clubs and venues inside government.

Minister Tara Cheyne changed her position and now backs the role. Tara Cheyne says it could connect the right people and let government step back.

Since the pandemic, Canberra's nightlife venues have been squeezed by soaring rent and insurance costs. Light rail construction keeps customers away, and people spend less on nights out.

Bar owners say they are barely surviving. The inquiry also recommends direct financial help and means-tested rent relief for businesses in the city centre harmed by ongoing light rail work.

Independent MLA Thomas Emerson, who has pushed for a commissioner since 2024, praised the Minister for changing her mind.
