Modern phones now manage overnight charging safely
Modern smartphones now manage overnight charging safely with smart features like adaptive charging.
For decades, the advice was simple: don't leave your phone charging overnight or let the battery reach 100 per cent. Modern phones have changed this.
Apple has offered optimised battery charging since 2019, which learns your routine and delays charging when the phone stays plugged in overnight. Samsung phones have sleep time protection that stops charging at about 80 per cent while you sleep, then finishes to 100 per cent just before you wake.
Google Pixel phones use adaptive charging to do the same. You can also manually set charging limits on recent iPhones and Samsung phones.
Heat remains the real risk: lithium-ion batteries degrade in high temperatures, especially when charging. Keep your phone away from hot cars and direct sun, and don't tuck it under pillows or bedding at night.
For most people with a modern phone, overnight charging is now safe when you use the device's built-in features.
