Geoscience Australia forms First Nations advisory committee
Geoscience Australia has appointed its first Indigenous advisory group. It will shape the agency's work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
The Commonwealth's geographic and geological data agency created its first formal Indigenous advisory group. The group has eight inaugural members.
Its first meeting was held on 23 September. It will gather at least twice a year in person or online.
Geoscience Australia says the move strengthens its relationship with First Nations peoples. It supports their self-determination.
CEO Melissa Harris said the group is key to the agency's work. It helps the agency hear Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices and knowledge.
The initiative is funded by the government's Resourcing Australia's Prosperity program.

Why it mattersFederal agencies rarely give Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples formal power to make decisions. This sets an example for others to follow. It gives First Nations communities real input on how their Country is studied and managed.
