4.8 earthquake shakes Victoria as 14,000 report tremor
A 4.8 magnitude quake struck near Leongatha at 2am, with more than 14,000 people reporting it.
An earthquake centred near Leongatha, about 135 kilometres south-east of Melbourne, struck at 2am on Thursday. Geoscience Australia recorded it at 4.8 magnitude and 10 kilometres deep.
Residents reported being woken as their houses swayed and windows rattled. Some said the noise sounded like an explosion.
Over 14,000 people reported feeling the tremor to Geoscience Australia. The largest earthquake ever recorded in Australia was the 1941 Meeberrie quake in Western Australia, which reached 6.9 magnitude.
