NSW junior firefighters train in drills and rescue skills
Thirty junior cadets trained in firefighting and rescue skills at the NSW RFS Hunter Valley weekend in Singleton.
The NSW Rural Fire Service brought junior cadets together at Singleton Showgrounds over the weekend to build their skills. The 30 members from across the Hunter Valley practised many skills.
The skills included mapping scenarios, pumping exercises, structure fire drills, first aid, motor vehicle rescue and hose bowling. The minimum age to join is 12, though some districts may require older members.
Junior members cannot respond to real emergencies. Junior members can attend training and gain qualifications.
They can compete in state and national competitions. They help with community fundraising and recruitment.
The weekend gives them practical experience before they reach the age when they can respond to actual callouts.
