Dr Nathie guilty of stealing fentanyl from Launceston hospital
Doctor admitted taking small leftover doses of fentanyl during shifts at the Launceston hospital.
Dr Nabil Nathie pleaded guilty on September 30 to stealing, using, and possessing fentanyl while working as a registrar at Launceston General Hospital. Police found more than 20 empty fentanyl vials at his South Launceston home in June 2025, months after a waste disposal company discovered discarded syringes and ampoules at the hospital.
Nathie took small doses from excess amounts left in vials after patients received their prescribed doses. Nathie's lawyer said he started using fentanyl in late April, driven by severe anxiety about returning to work after a three-month break.
The doses were small, meant to manage his anxiety without causing intoxication. Patients received clinically appropriate doses throughout, the defence argued.
Sentencing is set for October 20.
