Victorian junior doctors strike over pay and long shifts
More than 20 junior doctors at Wangaratta hospital joined thousands across Victoria striking for better pay and shift limits.
Junior doctors across Victoria walked out on Thursday demanding better pay and working conditions. More than 20 stopped work at Wangaratta hospital while thousands gathered at Parliament in Melbourne.
Junior doctors want a 30 per cent pay rise over four years, no more than 12.5-hour shifts, and three days off every fortnight. The strike ran from 1.30pm to 5.30pm and came after more than a year of failed negotiations.
Doctor fatigue and patient safety are key concerns. Emergency departments are exempt from the strike, with staffing remaining above Saturday levels for patient safety.
Regional junior doctors say they handle heavier workloads alongside long hours, adding to exhaustion.
