University of Canberra leads first dementia support program in Australia
The University of Canberra runs SPICE for Life, the country's first program blending research, therapy and carer support for people with dementia.
Dementia is now the leading cause of death in Australia, yet few places research care for the condition. The University of Canberra launched SPICE for Life in 2022, a 10-week program for people with dementia and their carers.
Participants get information, exercises, carer training and tips to improve wellbeing. Program lead Katie Van Soest says most people get a diagnosis and go home with little support after that.
The program keeps patients active and trains occupational therapy students in practical dementia care. Student Charli King says hands-on work with participants and their carers has been truly valuable.
Tradies Dickson funding has secured the program's future. Dementia diagnoses keep growing.
Programs like SPICE offer rare chances for patients, carers and health workers to learn and stay connected.
